No fewer than 500 terrorists invaded some communities in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State in the early hours of Sunday, October 11.
The attack, which was said to have occurred at about 1 a.m., saw the terrorists numbering over 500 and riding on nearly 400 motorcycles, carrying at least 2 armed men with each carrying AK-47 rifles, storming the area in a coordinated assault that caused widespread panic among residents.
Confirming the attack, Chairman of the local government area, Danladi Uganda, described the attack as one of the most daring in recent times.
He commended the bravery of the Nigerian Army for confronting the attackers despite their overwhelming number as they engaged terrorists in a fierce gun duel.
Uganda added that the exchange of gunfire reportedly lasted for several minutes, during which one of the military vehicles sustained significant damage, including burst tyres and shattered parts.
He lamented that, “It’s painful and disheartening that armed bandits now freely invade our areas — Rijau, Salka, Ibeto, neighbouring communities bordering Kebbi State. We must act fast to protect our people,”
The local government chairman, therefore, appealed to the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to immediately mobilise additional troops and logistics support to sustain the offensive and prevent the terrorists from regrouping.
