Niger State government through the Ministry of Mineral Resources has begun a crackdown on illegal mining in the state, following a directive by Governor Umar Bago.
This follows several complaints from local communities about the harmful effects of illegal mining on their health and livelihood.

In a statement by the information officer of the ministry, Dibie Maureen, the commissioner for the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Garba Yahaya, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and the Directors discovered the activities while on a tour of mining sites in Mai Wayo, Kateregi and Gadaeregi along Bida road Niger State.
During the visit, it was observed that some of the mining activities were causing environmental degradation and posing health risks to the communities living in the area.

Maureen added that the commissioner emphasized the importance of sustainable and responsible mining practices to protect both the environment and the health of the people.
The Commissioner said there is a need for proper Regulation and Monitoring of mining activities to prevent further harm and promised to continue monitoring the mining sites and taking necessary actions to enforce compliance with safety regulations.
In response to the government directive, the Project Manager of Ries Templar Integrated Service Adeife Oluwatosin, at the site agreed to suspend operations and cooperate with the authorities.
They expressed willingness to comply with the regulations and work towards improving their practices for the benefit of the state.
The visit highlighted the importance of regulating mining activities to protect the environment and the health of the state.
