Niger tanker explosion Update: Victims plead with the government to help them rebuild their shops

Scene of petrol tanker explosion along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State

24 hours after the unfortunate and preventable petrol tanker explosion that occurred at Dikko junction claiming about 86 lives, owners of shops burnt have been counting their losses.

Those who spoke with this reporter said their losses run to millions of naira, and want the government to assist them rebuild their shops due to the current economic challenges.

The scene where the tanker explosion occurred at Dikko junction houses a community and a filing station opposite it.

Fortunately, they were saved due to the timely intervention of the men of the fire service, but not without some losses.

Shops with grinding machines, cold room services and provision stores numbering about 20 were not left out.

55-year-old Michael Undie, with 6 children to cater for, has his only means of livelihood cut off as his entire provision shop was lost.

A visit to one of the hospitals, Umaru Musa Yar’adua Memorial Hospital at Sabon Wuse, where 27 victims were rushed to for medical attention, were all discharged for native treatment on request by their caregivers.

17-year-old Favour Michael was a victim and survivor of the incident. She says when the tanker fell, she tried escaping, which led to being burnt.

Favour wants the government to assist his father rebuild his shop.

The victims of the incident are, looking up to the government to come to their aid, especially in this current economic hardship.
