The National Orientation Agency, NOA along with some key players in the fashion industry are sensitising the public against body shaming of plus size individuals in order to create a mental health balance in the society through fashion.
They made this known at a briefing aimed at curbing the rate of suicide cases in the country as a result of depression.
Once upon a time in the world of fashion, regular size clothing flooded the market and most designers and lovers of fashion easily identified with the regular sizes, giving less attention to the plus sized woman.
Today, the tables have turned, as some plus size advocates in collaboration with NOA gathered in a show of support for the plus size woman and fight against body shaming which they say could affect one’s mental state of health and even lead to suicide.
They say the African International Plus Size Initiative is a timely effort which will help to promote the African culture, create jobs, instill self confidence and create a mental health balance in the society through fashion.
Participants at the briefing say accepting oneself is the first step to coming out of depression as a plus size, while advising on the right meals in moderation, healthy lifestyle and also encouraging designers to factor in the plus size clothing.
