The national conversation on diversification of the Nigerian economy leveraging on gains of science and technology took the center stage at the 2024 Technology Expo held in Abuja.
President Bola Tinubu at the opening ceremony said his administration will dedicate 0.5% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to research development in order to fast track meaningful developments in the country.
President Tinubu notes that he identifies with the new global order, leveraging on technology. He reiterated that the government is ready to key into the enormous opportunities of the tech sector as part of efforts to achieve its renewed hope agenda of transforming the nation into the technology hub of Africa
The annual event provides the platform for scientists, innovators, researchers and science enthusiasts from across the country to showcase products of research and services in the firm, with exhibitors believing that if supported, could fast track the socioeconomic development of the country
But, the challenge that has remained over the years is that, most of the products continue to gather dusts on the shelves with little or no support to push them out for massive commercialization.
Though successive governments have continuedl to build campaign on improving the economy and the welfare of the citizens, the continued reliance on oil and an import driven economy is seen as a major factor putting pressure on the value of the Naira, thereby contributing to the inflation and economic hardships in the country.
However, the 2024 Technology Expo highlighted the need for massive !investments in the technology sector and Government’s commitment to patronizing home made products as a way of fast tracking the nation’s desired growth.
It was also an opportunity to honour and encourage some Nigerian students who have made remarkable strides in the field of science and technology.
Experts believe that Nigeria’s journey towards self sufficiency using the tools of science and technology will be achievable if the glains of these exhibitions are well harnessed to begin to transform the country’s potentials into tangible realities.
