The United Nations entity for Gender Equality and the empowerment of Women also known as UN Women has classified Nigeria as not being an egalitarian society.
The women advocacy body said it has observed the wide margin of gender inequality in the country grow to what it described as its current unbearable heights
UN Women Deputy Country Representative, Lansana Wonneh said it was important for Nigeria to consciously begin to close the gender inequality gaps if it hopes to benefit from the full potential of both its male and female population.
Wonneh said this in Abuja at the opening of a one-day capacity strengthening workshop on gender-responsive budgeting organized in collaboration with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for staff of the National Assembly and the parliamentary Institute.
According to the Dep. Country Representative of UN Women what currently obtains in Nigeria cannot be viewed in anyway as being an equal or egalitarian.
He rued statistics that clearly give greater edge and opportunities in businesses, agriculture and politics to men while neglecting the women.
He called for more legislative efforts to be taken to quickly reduce or completely eliminate the disparity that exists and leaves Nigerian women subdued in their own country.
