The Central Bank of Nigeria says more than 12 million contactless cashless cards are currently in circulation nationwide, as it moves to further strengthen the banking system and modernise payments infrastructure in 2026.
CBN’s Deputy Director of Corporate Communications and Investors Relations Sidi Hakama, made this known at the 47th Kaduna International Trade Fair.He said, recent financial reforms are designed to reposition Nigeria’s financial system for stability, transparency and long-term growth.
The apex bank disclosed that Nigeria now ranks among Africa’s most advanced digital payments markets, with leading fintech applications recording between 10 and 50 million downloads, alongside over 12 million contactless cards in active circulation.

Looking ahead to 2026, the CBN says its strategic priorities include strengthening the banking system, ensuring durable price stability, modernising payment systems and expanding financial inclusion to reach more Nigerians, particularly in underserved communities.
The CBN says sustained reforms and responsible financial practices remain key to building a resilient and inclusive Nigerian economy.
