Nigeria will field the largest delegation as 43 countries prepare to compete at the third African U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta from July 16 to 20
Organisers have confirmed the participation of 937 athletes and officials for the five-day event, which will see some of the continent’s brightest young talents compete at the refurbished MKO Abiola Sports Arena.
According to the National Sports Commission, host nation Nigeria will present 110 athletes, 60 men and 50 women, supported by 22 officials. South Africa follows closely with a 100-member contingent, while Ethiopia, Kenya and Algeria are also sending large teams.
The NSC also stated that preparations are ongoing in the capital city of Ogun State, with final touches being made to logistics, accommodation, transportation and other key areas.
The event, sanctioned by the Confederation of African Athletics, is expected to feature strong representation from countries including Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon and Uganda.

It marks another major sports event for Abeokuta, just two months after the city hosted over 15,000 athletes and officials at the 2024 National Sports Festival.
Ogun State authorities say the successful staging of that event helped build capacity and confidence ahead of this continental competition.
Nigeria’s athletics federation hopes the home advantage will translate to a strong medal performance, while the event is also seen as a stepping stone for young athletes aiming for global competitions.
The African U18/U20 Championships will also feature the CAA Congress, adding to what officials describe as a “busy and important period” for athletics in the region.
The tournament is expected to draw attention from scouts, coaches and federations as Africa’s next generation of sprinters, jumpers and throwers take centre stage.
