The Canadian Government, European Union, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom and United States of America have condemned the recent ban of Twitter by the Nigerian Government and proposing registration requirements for other social media platforms.

In a joint statement by the missions in Nigeria, they strongly support the fundamental human rights and freedom of expression and access to information as a pillar of democracy in Nigeria and around the world both online and offline.

It adds that banning system of expression is not the solution. They say this measures inhabit information and commerce at precisely the moment when Nigeria needs to foster inclusive dialogue and expression of opinions as well as share vital information at this time of Covid-19 pandemic.

They say, the path to a more secure Nigeria lies in more and not less communication, to accompany concerted efforts to include Nigerian citizens in dialogue towards unity, peace and prosperity.

The missions in their joint statement also announced that as partners of Nigeria, they are ready to stand with the country to achieve these goals.
