Nigerian Government now has new guidelines for establishing and coordinating organ and tissue transplantation services in Nigeria.

The document, unveiled in Abuja on Thursday by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, represented by the Director of the Hospital Services Department, Salahudeen Jimoh, aims to enhance organ donation and transplantation practices across the country.

Key focus areas of the guidelines include ethics in transplantation, donor protection, patient safety, minimum standards for organ transplants, and procedures for ensuring compliance.

The initiative is expected to provide a life-saving opportunity for individuals suffering from end-stage organ failure.

According to a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Alaba Balogun, Dr. Salako emphasized that the guidelines were the result of extensive collaboration among healthcare professionals, legal experts, professional bodies, media organizations, and other key stakeholders.

He noted that every detail was meticulously scrutinized during the validation process to address the unique challenges of organ transplantation in Nigeria.

To further strengthen the regulatory framework, the minister emphasized the need for mapping and certifying all health institutions involved in organ donation and transplantation.

This, he said, would ensure that they meet the highest standards of medical practice, ultimately improving the quality and safety of organ transplants in the country.
