The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has warned that shifting global alliances and emerging foreign security interests in Africa pose serious implications for Nigeria’s national security and defence posture.
Speaking at a meeting with branch and unit commanders in Abuja, Air Marshal Aneke said the withdrawal of some traditional partners from parts of the Sahel, coupled with the growing interest of other global powers in establishing a security footprint on the continent, is reshaping Africa’s security landscape.
Air Marshal Sunday Aneke said the global security environment is becoming increasingly uncertain and complex, driven by renewed great-power competition, the effects of which are now evident across Africa.
The meeting, which coincided with his first 100 days in office, provided a strategic platform for collective reflection, leadership alignment, and operational recalibration aimed at repositioning the Nigerian Air Force to address emerging security challenges.
Commending officers for their commitment to duty, the Chief of Air Staff urged them to remain focused, disciplined, and united in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Air Marshal Aneke further warned that escalating violence in the Sahel region now threatens to spill into coastal West African states, including the Benin Republic and Nigeria, calling for heightened vigilance and preparedness.
The meeting also offered the Chief of Air Staff the opportunity to review achievements recorded within his first 100 days in office and to outline strategic priorities for strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigerian Air Force.
