The 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army under Section 3 Operation Whirl Stroke has launched an offensive code-named Operation Zafin Wuta against criminals terrorising Southern Taraba State in North-East Nigeria.
The Army said the operation targets the safety and return of internally displaced persons, IDPs to their ancestral homes.
The repeated attacks by gunmen on communities in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State have reportedly left at least 65 persons dead, with hundreds of persons fleeing their homes for safety.
The launch of Operation Zafin Wuta has raised the hopes of displaced persons that a day for their return home may be in sight.
The operation aims to comb the enclaves of terrorists to flush out the gunmen disturbing the peace of communities in Southern Taraba.
The 6 Brigade commander, Brigadier-General Kingsley Uwa assured the IDPs that their homes will soon be safe.
The Army’s operation is also in partnership with the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA to provide relief materials for the displaced persons.
The IDPs want the government to designate the attackers as terrorists, considering the nature and impact of the attacks.
The Army also engaged with the paramount ruler, Aku-Uka of Wukari, Manu Ishaku, and other stakeholders from the communities to gain more insight on the security challenges.
The 6 Brigade Commander says the operation will be carried out professionally to defeat criminal elements, and restore security.
