Nigerian businesses again locked up by Ghanaian authorities

Nigerian businesses in Ghana have again been locked up by the Ghanaian authorities.

The Nigerian businesses, electrical appliances dealers, located in Tema, Ashiama, and Oprah Square were locked up on Sunday by the Ghanaian Union of Traders, GUTA.

Nigerians In Diaspora Organization NIDO, Ghana Chapter Chairman, Calistus Elozieuwa who disclosed this said, the shops were locked Sunday night, whereby the Nigerian traders resume to a locked up shop, early Monday morning.

Elozieuwa added that the Ghanian authorities have maintained that the Nigerian Traders are not allowed as retailers in their market, according to the Ghanian Investment Promotion Center law GIPC.

Elozieuwa noted that although the previous intervention by the Nigerian government was to reach a consensus with the Ghanaian government, to effect a change to the local law, but nothing was effected.

The Minister of Education, Trade and Investment on Desk, at the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana, Adebola Arewa, claimed he was not aware of the recent business lockup, but will investigate it.

Arewa added that over 190 Nigerian shops in Ghana have been under lock since the previous intervention by the Nigerian government in 2019.
