The Nigerian Defence Academy, (NDA), has unveiled a monument, in honour of the late Major General Aderonke Kale, the first female Nigerian to reach the rank of Major General in the Nigerian Army.
Major General John Ochai, the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, emphasised the need for gender inclusivity, to enhance development.
The event, graced by top military officers, esteemed members of the academia and other dignitaries, honoured the legacy of the first female Major General of the Nigerian Army, the late Major General Aderonke Kale.
It also served as a platform to discuss vital issues of gender equality within the armed forces.
The lecture, themed, “The Impact of Traditional Roles on Women’s Participation in the Armed Forces: Exploring Gender Stereotypes and Cultural Barriers,” addressed the significant challenges women face in the military, and the progress made over the years.
The Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Major General John Ochai, emphasised the need for the nation to embrace diversity and inclusivity, to achieve true development.
He said that any nation that discriminates against its citizens, will remain underdeveloped.
Retired Major General Tilewa Amusu, the second female to attain the rank of Major General, and to command the Nigerian Army Medical Corps, highlighted the importance of recognising and overcoming gender stereotypes and cultural barriers, to ensure equal opportunities for all.
The ceremony also included the unveiling of a monument, dedicated to the memory of the late Major General Aderonke in recognition of what was described as her pioneering achievements and enduring legacies.
