The Nigerian Government says out of the 30,000 beneficiaries of the Commonwealth scholarship, Nigeria has the greatest number of scholars in the scheme since its inception in 1959.
Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, David Adejo revealed this in Abuja at the 2024/2025 Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan nomination interview.
The Permanent Secretary said the number was credited to the best brains the country was able to produce in the different fields of studies.
Adejo said Nigeria faces enormous developmental challenges and as such the country relies on scholars to put their best in addressing the challenges.

The Director, Federal Scholarship Board, Ndajiwo Asta in her remarks explained that the awards were highly competitive due to limited number compared to the large number of applications received yearly.
Asta said that about 2,000 applicants had applied through the Electronic Application System, which covered the awardees and their spouses.
