Organised labour in Nigeria is asking the Nigerian government to rectify the moribund welfare and safety nets of workers.
Labour has therefore urged government to key into the conventions on welfare and safety reached at the just concluded international labour conference in Geneva, Switzerland, to help counter the international trade union confederation ITUC report which counts Nigeria among ten worst countries in workers rights protection.
Meanwhile, Nigerian government officials at the conference insist that President Bola Tinubu’s government has made workers’ welfare top priority, especially for accepting to review the new minimum wage every three years from five and the boost in employees compensation policy among others
The new Convention is a step in addressing occupational safety and health risks related to biological agents.
For the Nigerian government, the conference discussion on “addressing informality and promoting the transition to formality for decent work is one Convention set for ratification.

The discussion aimes to identify innovative approaches to support workers in transiting from informal to formal employment, building on the 2015 Recommendation concerning the transition from the informal to the formal economy.
As the International Labour conference comes to a close, it also decided to place on the agenda of the next session the topic of “Decent work in the platform economy, which reflects the growing importance of addressing labour standards and worker rights in the context of digital platforms and the gig economy.
The Conference adopted a resolution concerning measures related to Myanmar, Palestinians, and everywhere there are crisis that have affected workers and their families.
