Nigeria’s 36 State Governors have tasked the National Assembly on the critical need for State Police as the process for 1999 Constitution Amendment gathers momentum.
In a Communiqué signed by the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdul Rahman Abdul Razaq of Kwara State, the State Governors umbrella body noted that the recognition of State Police in the constitution will correct a fundamental flaw in the national security architecture.
The State Governors demand is coming on the backdrop of soaring attacks by terrorist and other criminal tendencies in rural communities, especially in the Northern part of Nigeria.
In another vein, the Governors urged the National New Minimum Wage Committee to consider the current realities, individual State peculiarities and consequent impact on the capacity of the government and private sector employers to pay a recommended minimum wage.
The Forum also pledged to engage relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government in a bid to address the growing concerns raised by United States Embassy over illegal and fraudulent inter-country adoption of Nigerian students by US citizens.
