Kano State Judicial Service Commission

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken disciplinary action against eight judiciary staff members in response to serious allegations of misconduct. This was confirmed in a statement issued by Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, the spokesperson for the Kano State Judiciary.

In a meeting held on November 4, the JSC reviewed various petitions against the staff and issued sanctions, which included compulsory retirements and suspensions. Among those affected were two court registrars, magistrates, and a finance registrar.

According to the statement, a detailed investigation by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee (JPCC) uncovered gross misconduct by several individuals. Nasir Ado, a magistrate, was found guilty of conducting court proceedings without proper records and falsifying records to cover up the irregularity. As a result, the JSC recalled him from judicial duties.

Magistrate Yusuf Kawu was sanctioned after an investigation revealed that he unlawfully used his judicial position to release a convict who had been sentenced to one year in prison without an option of fine. The JSC determined that Kawu’s actions were illegal and indefensible, leading to his indefinite removal from judicial functions.

Magistrate Sanusi Usman-Atana was warned for overstepping his jurisdiction in a criminal trial and for granting bail without informing the prosecution. The JSC cautioned him to respect his jurisdictional limits.

The JSC also ordered the compulsory retirement of Salisu Adamu-Nayola, a finance registrar, after an inquiry found he had accepted bribes to process inheritance entitlements. Nayola’s actions were deemed corrupt, and he was dismissed from his post. His accomplice, Alkali Abdulmuminu Nuhu, was also recalled from judicial duties for two years and placed under supervision.

Alkali Abubakar Abdullahi, a judge at Takai Sharia Court, received a strong warning for handling cases beyond his jurisdiction. He was advised to refrain from exceeding his territorial limits in future.

Court messenger Shuaibu Bello was suspended for four months without pay after an investigation revealed that he had engaged in corruption by charging excessive fees for opening a file and had behaved disrespectfully toward a court user.

Finally, Shamsu Abbas, a court registrar, was compulsorily retired for releasing a suspect on bail without the case being officially assigned to any court.

The JSC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the judiciary, ensuring that all staff perform their duties lawfully and respect judicial processes.
