The contribution of the mining sector to the nation’s gross domestic product GDP is being seriously under calculated, hence the need to move for an amendment of the laws that keep Mining on the exclusive list.
President of the Nigerian mining and Geosciences society Professor Akinade Olatunji made this claim in Jos, as stakeholders in the sector converged on the Plateau state capital to strategize in order to move the sector forward.
The move to address the challenges in the Nigerian mining sector continues. According to Professor Akinade Olatunji, the challenges facing the industry are not limited to Nigeria hence the need for better enforcement of the laws guiding the mining sector in the country.
He called on state governments to rather than ban mining activities in their states, liaise with their lawmakers in the national assembly, to move for the amendment of laws that keep mining on the exclusive list .
This will also form thrust of discussions at the 59th annual conference and exhibition of the Nigerian mining and geosciences society slated which will be held in Jos after 22 years of absence in a city considered to be the home of mining in Nigeria.
