Nigerian Government has raised alarm over the significant drop in food production output in the country following the findings of a survey report.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono while addressing the 2020 World Food Day celebration in Abuja, says the country must embark on aggressive food production to avert the looming food crisis.

Several factors are said to have contributed to the low output of food production in Nigeria. These include a number of environmental issues and the COVID-19 pandemic among others.

Findings of the survey conducted by the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services show that rice production decreased by 3% in 28 states.

Maize dropped by 1.55% with final output estimated at 12.4 Million tonnes; Sorghum 0.37% and Cassava 2.47%.

However Soybean production increased from 1.048 million tonnes to 1.148 million tonnes.

The Minister was not impressed by the report, but encouraged farmers not to relent in their daily production as he pledged for more government’s support.

The World Food Day celebration is held annually on the 16th of October in more than 150 countries to raise global awareness on the issues behind poverty and hunger.

The theme for 2020 is “Grow, Nourish, sustain together. Our action are our future”
