Newly appointed Service Chiefs in Nigeria have assumed office with promises of infusing fresh ideas to improve the country’s security, and consolidating on the gains made by their predecessors in the fight against insurgency.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of Air Staff expressed their resolve in their first official addresses at the defence headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
The official change of guards took place at Nigeria’s military high command headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital city, after their Senate confirmation screening on Wednesday and subsequent swearing in by President Bola Tinubu.
Buoyed by Presidential authority granted them by the Commander-in-Chief after decorating them with their new ranks, the Service Chiefs seem ready to take up their weighty responsibilities with pledges to initiate new security strategies that’ll combat and defeat national threats.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, now upgraded from his previous position as the country’s Army Chief, said it’s “a period of consolidation.”
General Oluyede’s successor and new Army Chief, Major General Waidi Shaibu intends to transform the Army into a more agile, efficient, and combat-ready force.
The new Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas did not mince words either, promising to lead from the front.
For his part, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Aneke’s resolve is to safeguard Nigeria’s airspace and prioritize the welfare of officers and airmen.
