The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC in Cross River State has announced the cancellation of the 2021 Workers Day celebration in the state due to the inability of the security agencies to secure the release of the abducted Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ben Ukpepi.

Ukpepi was kidnapped early in march in his CROSPIL Estate home in Akapbuyo local government area of Cross River State, and his whereabouts remain unknown to date.

Speaking with ait.live in Calabar, the NLC Vice Chairman,Comrade Lawrence Achuta said the Union decided to cancel all workers day celebrations due to the situation on ground.

Achuta however hinted that there will be a peaceful rally at the freedom park along Mary Slessor Avenue on Saturday morning to press home the release of their chairman from the kidnapper’s den.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command has warned all labour Unions in the State not to embark on any protest in any disguise, stating that protest without approval remains illegal and will be treated as such.

A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO Irene Ugbo, says the command will strategically act and decisively deal with any person or group who want to take laws into their hands.

Every first of May has been earmarked as Workers Day globally and Cross River State has been joining Nigerian Workers to celebrate the day year in year out except the 2021 edition.
