The Nigerian Senate has called for an emergency meeting with the leadership of the organised labour over the indefinite strike embarked upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) , Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other Affiliate Unions with a view to resolving the issues Amicably
The upper chamber also urged organised labour to immediately halt the strike in the national interest
The resolution of the senate follows a motion of National Importance sponsored by
senate Leader , Opeyemi Bamidele on the need for the Nigerian Labour Congress and associate Labour unions to reconsider its current stand on the ongoing industrial action in the spirit of patriotism and adherence to rule of law .
Senate leader Bamidele in his lead debate pointed out that , leaders of the NLC and TUC, as well as other affiliate unions, such as ASUU , National union of Electricity Employees, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Judiciary staff union of Nigeria , Academic staff union of polytechnic among others have also joined the nation wide strike .
He added that it is worrission that the strike which commenced since the 14th of November over alleged brutality of the president of NLC in imo state, are not targeted towards the welfare of the Nigerian worker but arising from the alleged political involvement of the NLC president who is also a citizen of imo state .
The lawmakers stressed that If the strike is allowed to continue, Nigerians will be most affected and in turn could lead to a total collapse of the economy.

While seconding the motion , senator Ali Ndume condemned the attack on NLC president, adding that it is wrong for an incident that happened in Imo state to affect his trip to Borno state and other states being punished as well
Senator Adams Oshiomole (APC-Edo) says his primary concern has always been Labour issues and condemned the brutality on Labour members, adding that he had been a victim of brutality as NLC leader.
He added that the senate has the obligation to do everything possible to bring amicable solution to the current labour issues.
In his concluding remarks, president of the Senate Godswill Akpabio urged, The NLC, TUC and all other labour unions, that no matter the grievances, in the public interest put an end to the strike, to avoid unnecessary suffering by Nigerians who are also part of their families.
He concluded that families and friends should not be allowed to suffer for the Malfeasance of others
He urged the senate clerk to fix a date Immediately and contact the Labour unions for an emergency meeting with the senate Leadership with a view to resolving the issues
Earlier The National Assembly complex in Abuja Was shut down by organised labour groups in protest of the manhandling of the national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.
