Reverse electricity tariff hike now and avoid full-blown protests and strike.

This was the message to the Nigerian Electricity commission by organised labour on Monday when it shut down business activities at the commissions headquarters.

One after the other, workers gathered at the headquarters office of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.

Their mission was simple, an immediate reversal of the hike in electricity tariff by over 200 per cent.

The workers from both the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, are also demanding the withdrawal of the categorisation of electric distribution into bands

Joe Ajaero, NLC President, led the workers on the protest

The deputy President of TUC, Tommy Okon, told the federal government to focus on increasing electricity generation and providing enough meters to pull more people out of the estimated billing system.

Moments later and after the NLC President threatened to cut electricity to NERC offices for seven days, the Chairman, Salisu Garba, eventually showed up.

Garba, however, did not say if the government will be reversing the tariff hike. Rather, he presented its achievements in some other areas

The protest was held simultaneously in all NERC and TCN offices nationwide
