The Northwest Zonal NLC Women’s Committee says the rate of rape, child battering, and domestic violence is on the high side in recent times.

The body HSS noted that it cannot rule out poverty as playing a vital role in the menace in the society.

The Coordinator, Martha Banki, made the statement in Birnin Kebbi at the Northwest Zonal Conference, attended by the chairpersons and secretaries of the seven states that make up the Zone.

She added that in addition to poverty, poor public enlightenment on the need to see the value of women in society was contributing the rising incidents.

In her welcome address, the Kebbi State Chairperson of the NLC Women’s Committee, Hadiza Riba, commended the sustained support of the Kebbi State Government, towards women empowerment and girl-child education in the state.

Riba said such a conference supported by the State government has boosted the morale of the women’s committee and encouraged them to continue to support the government in its drive for women’s empowerment and girl-child education in the state.

She also said that the conference, which is being held for the first time in Kebbi State, with the effort of the wife of the Governor, is promoting the campaign on women and girl-child education, eradication of gender-based violence, and women empowerment, all aimed at improving the livelihood and income of women.

The theme for the conference is, ‘Barriers for Young Women and Girl-Child Education in Northern Nigeria’.
