The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has announced the permanent cancellation of the weekly Monday sit-at-home across the South-East.
In a statement signed by IPOB’s spokesperson and Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, and seen posted on Kanu’s Lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor’s X handle, the group said the order takes effect from Monday, February 9, 2026, urging residents of the region to resume normal activities without fear or intimidation.
According to the statement, Kanu “staked everything on the line” to ensure that children return to school on Mondays and that economic activities across the region resume fully.
The group said there is no longer any justification for markets, schools, offices and transport services to shut down on Mondays.
According to the statement, there were warnings that any individual or group attempting to enforce sit-at-home in defiance of the new order would be acting against the directive and would be regarded as “enemies of the people and the Biafran cause.”
The group while calling on the public to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, alleged that some actors may still attempt “false-flag” operations to instil fear and discourage residents from going out.
While urging people to resume work, IPOB also cautioned state governments against using threats, demolitions or forced market closures to compel traders to operate.
