After weeks of speculation, the only governor elected on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned from the party.
The NNPP has described the resignation and defection of the Kano State governor as a betrayal of trust.
In a statement from its national secretariat in Abuja, the party said it received the development with shock and disappointment, noting that Governor Yusuf was elected on the platform of the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement.
The party said the governor was entrusted with the mandate of the people of Kano State based on years of loyalty and service, warning that his exit could return the state to political forces that previously opposed its progress.

The NNPP dismissed claims of an irredeemable crisis within the party, pointing to congresses held from ward to national level in December 2025, supervised by INEC and attended by the governor.
It also cited its victories in two supplementary elections in Kano State in August 2025 as proof that the party remains stable.
While recalling past political defections in Kano State, the NNPP urged supporters to remain calm and peaceful.
The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson.
