The students wing of the coalition of Northern Groups CNG has kicked against on going plans to scrap Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Tetfund, insisting that doing so will stifle education financing and lead to tuition increment which will adversely affect students.

The students made their position known during a peaceful demonstration at the Benue State University in Makurdi.

The proposed tax changes to Tetfund bill currently before the National Assembly which could drastically affect funding for Nigerians universities and invariably lead to tuition hikes generated this reaction from the student wing of the coalition of Northern Groups.

While calling for early disbursement of NELFUND to institutions to avoid pressure on beneficiaries, the students insist that they will not accept any attempt by the authorities to scrap Tetfund.

The coalition of students called for wider consultation on the proposed tax reform Bill as it could paralyze the education sector.

The proposed Tetfund cuts continue to raise fears of tuition hikes despite students loan relief which the students say a negligible number have benefited from.
