The Nigerian Union Of Journalists, NUJ, has condemned in strong terms the remarks credited to Sheik Ahmad Gumi labeling journalists as criminals for calling out bandits noting that there’s no correlation between journalism and criminality.
The NUJ described Gumis comments as unnecessary and unprovoked attack on members of the media stressing that the attacks was unacceptable and an indication that the cleric was pursuing a different agenda.
The NUJ expressed shock that Sheik Gumi who has used the media to advance the course of his mission to bandits across the northwest is attacking journalists at the same time for describing bandits as criminals.

The NUJ noted that Gumi involvement in Negotiations as a non state actor should have landed him behind bars but for the weakness of the country’s leadership.
The NUJ urged the global community to document the utterances and actions of Sheik Gumi and to hold him to account for any bandit related mishap that may affect journalists across the country.
