NUJ knocks NBC over sanction on AIT, others

Following fines on AIT and some media organisations by the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over footages of visuals used in the wake of the ENDSARS protests, the Nigeria Union of Journalist, NUJ has called for an end to what it describes as an open contempt and disrespect for the media.

A statement by NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo noted that the fines imposed on the media houses were unnecessary, discriminatory, an attempt to discourage free media; asking that the fine should be withdrawn immediately.

The NUJ said the decision by NBC to penalise AIT, Arise Television, and Channels Television; and accusing the television Stations of professional misconduct in their coverage of the #EndSARS protests further exposed the nation’s anti-democratic tendencies.

The statement said rather than trying to muzzle the media, it advised NBC to applaud the media coverage of the protests and the professionalism of the journalists who despite the enormous risks to their lives ensured a comprehensive coverage of the protests.
