The Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, CROSIEC, has fixed October 26th 2024, for local government elections in the state.
CROSIEC Chairman, Ekong Boco said this during a press briefing held at the Commission’s office in Calabar.
He outlined the election timetable, stating that party primaries, including the resolution of disputes, would commence on September 25, 2024, while campaigns by political parties are scheduled to hold between 20-25 October 2024.
Boco said the commission is fully prepared to conduct transparent and credible elections and urged all stakeholders to cooperate to ensure a successful exercise.
While several political parties expressed their readiness to participate, the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in Cross River, Venatius Ikem raised concerns about the short notice for the elections.
He questioned whether the one-month timeframe complied with the provisions of the recently amended CROSIEC bill, but confirmed that the PDP would participate in protest.
Despite the concerns raised, preparations for the October 26th local government elections are set to proceed as scheduled, with CROSIEC expressing confidence in the process.
