Ogoniland Clean Up: Environmental Rights activists visit oil spill sites

Environmental rights activists in the Niger Delta region have again called on the federal government to prevail on oil companies operating in Ogoniland to decommission all their old oil wells, dismantle and remove all the rotten pipelines and replace them with new ones to avoid more oil spills in the region.

The environmental rights activists after a tour of oil spill sites in well 14 yola in kpean community in Ogoniland, raised concerns about the reoccurring oil spill spillages in the region, yet the federal government is planning to repollute the environment by the planned resumption of oil production.

They noted that with the reoccurring decimal of oil spill there is need for the federal government to have a rethink of planned resumption of oil in the region

After the tour to the sites, a renowned environmental rights activist who led the team, Nnimmo Bassey, confirmed that there has never been a proper reaction response to oil spills in the niger delta over seventy years, hence the need for decommissioning of all oil wells in the region.

They expressed concerns about the reoccurring decimal of oil spillages in the region and expressed worries that the federal government is still planning to repollute the environment by the planned resumption of oil production in Ogoniland.

The community people canvassed for compensation and a comprehensive total clean-up of the environment to restore the ecosystem and ensure the health and well of the community.
