Over 2,000 commercial motorcycle riders, also known as Okada riders, including their passengers, are to enroll in health insurance scheme organized by the Abeokuta South and North Local Governments in partnership with the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme.

The Chairmen of Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South Local Governments, Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo and Balogun Olaniyi Afeez, in a joint press conference in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, described the scheme as a life-saving initiative aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals in the informal sector.

The pilot initiative starts from the Abeokuta metropolis and is expected to be introduced in the other 18 local government areas across the state.

The grassroots chairmen said the scheme is designed to address the safety and welfare challenges facing operators and commuters.

They also stressed that the scheme will help in capturing the biometric data of the Okada riders.

In an interaction with some Okada riders, it was revealed that the health insurance scheme is a welcome development for the riders and their passengers, but they appealed for a reduction in the premium payment for the health insurance scheme

The council bosses claimed that the scheme has enjoyed widespread acceptance from riders.
