Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to disqualify Governor Hope Uzodinma from contesting the 2027 Imo West Senatorial election.
Okorocha is challenging both Uzodinma’s eligibility to contest while serving as governor and the process through which he emerged as the All Progressives Congress candidate.
Okorocha argues that Uzodinma’s second term as Imo State Governor runs until January 2028, after the inauguration of the next Senate.
He is asking the court to determine whether the governor can contest another elective office while still serving his current tenure.
The former governor is also disputing the outcome of the APC direct primary held on May 18.
Okorocha claims he received 150,780 votes against Uzodinma’s 102,158 and should therefore have been declared the party’s candidate.
He wants the court to declare INEC’s publication of Uzodinma’s name as the APC candidate unlawful and compel the electoral commission to recognise him instead.
Okorocha is also seeking an order restraining Uzodinma, the APC or anyone acting on their behalf from presenting the governor as the party’s candidate.
INEC, Governor Hope Uzodinma and the APC are listed as defendants in the suit.
No date has been fixed for hearing.
