Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, says to have a decent society, certain measures and laws that will entrench peace in homes and public places should be put in place bearing in mind that the instinct of man sometimes tends to go negative to the law of peace.
Governor Okowa, who made this known at Government House, Asaba, when he signed into law bills on the elimination of violence in private and public life 2020 and delta State Local Content Agency Law, said the law provides enough punishment for would be offenders.
The bills were presented by the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.
Oborevwori said the bill, which had its first and last reading on July 7 and 28, 2020, respectively covers issues that affect the contemporary society and created atmosphere for peaceful co-existence and harmonious relationship.
The first bill which made provision for the protection of victims of domestic violence, provides for adequate programmes and care for victims. It ensures the rehabilitation and recovery of such victims and enforcement of court orders by law enforcement officers, state institutions, and other relevant agencies in the state.
It also takes care of other traditional harmful practices like widowhood treatment, female circumcision and genital mutilation as well as indecent dressing which is viewed as primary cause of rape.
Governor Okowa, while signing the two bills into law, called on Deltans to find an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the content of the bills so as to be aware of their actions.

The Governor believed that the Local Content Law would strengthen the people beyond employment by creating respect and understanding between communities, industries, and other enterprises in their localities.
