The Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Oluwatoyin Akeredolu has rejected the request of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly to set up a 7-man panel to investigate acts of alleged gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi.
In a letter dated July 7, the Speaker of the Assembly, Bamidele Oleyelogun, asked the Chief Judge to constitute a 7-man panel as required by the Constitution to probe the allegations against the Deputy Governor.
Justice Akeredolu in her response, however, said the number of lawmakers who signed the impeachment motion falls short of the required two-thirds required by the Constitution. Only 14 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice out of the 26 members of the Assembly.
The Chief Judge insists that the required two-thirds of the 26-member Assembly is 17 lawmakers. At least 9 members of the Assembly including the Deputy Speaker and two other lawmakers who have now been suspended refused to endorse the impeachment notice.
