The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has threatened to sanction any political party engaging in open campaign before the commission’s stipulated time.

The National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, disclosed this at a capacity building workshop for Heads of Voter Education, Publicity and Public Affairs Officers of the Commission, from the 19 states of Northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.

The commission also allayed fears on the postponement of the 2023 General Elections, due to insecurity

The continued expression of interest to contest the various political offices, with some engaging in secret campaigns had
informed INEC’s National Commissioner For Information And Voter Education, Festus Okoye, to clear the air, that it is not yet time for political campaigns.

Okoye said the current level of insecurity remains the greatest threat to the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections in the country.

He however assured that the commission is working with relevant agencies to ensure that the 2023 General Election holds

Stakeholders at the capacity building are optimistic that the training received will help in ensuring a smooth electoral process.
