Leaders of opposition political parties across Nigeria have converged in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, for a high-level summit focused on strengthening unity and preserving democratic values.
In his opening address, Seyi Makinde welcomed former governors, party leaders, and stakeholders, describing Ibadan as the “political capital of the South West” and a fitting venue for discussions on Nigeria’s democratic future.
Makinde warned of a growing imbalance in the political landscape, citing what he described as an increasing concentration of power in the hands of a single party.
“Across Nigeria today, we are witnessing a level of political concentration that should concern all of us,” he said, pointing to the alignment of several state governments under one party and what he termed efforts to consolidate legislative control.

He also raised concerns over internal crises and prolonged legal disputes within opposition parties, warning that these challenges are weakening their ability to provide credible alternatives.
“Individually, these developments may be explained, but collectively, they suggest that the space for real political competition is gradually shrinking,” he added.
The summit, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” will feature strategy sessions aimed at strengthening collaboration and restoring balance to Nigeria’s political system.
