Opu-Nembe crisis: Bayelsa Governor accuses police of human rights abuse

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri is demanding that the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun withdraws his officers and men from Opu-Nembe community in Nembe Local Government Area. He insists that the collaborative efforts of security agents in the state were enough to ensure peace in the troubled area.

During a visit to the community on Monday, August 14 to ascertain the situation of things, the Governor who spoke through his Deputy, Lawrence Ewdrudjakpo says the alleged invasion was uncalled for and a violation of human rights.

Saturday 12, 2023 witnessed a raid by police personnel from the Force Headquarters Abuja in Opu-Nembe, community to arrest criminals and recover illegal ammunitions. The action of the police has been condemned by the State Government.

Governor Douye Diri in the past has held meetings with the Chiefs and Elders of the community as part of efforts to broker peace in the conflict-prone area. The Deputy Governor affirms that the action of the police personnel is condemnable.

Meanwhile, calls have been made to the Presidency to conduct a thorough investigation in a bid to unravel the cause and the actors as well as bring perpetrators to book.
