The Organised Labour in Nigeria is demanding urgent special salary packages for Basic Education teachers in the country, with reference to the newly enhanced welfare for Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The latest campaign is led by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, who has decried the neglect of Basic Education, especially at the sub-national levels
Ajaero who was speaking at the 2026 solemn assembly of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), gave knocks to States who have yet to fully implement the N70,000 national minimum wage
Another concern for both the NLC and the NUT is the outright refusal of some States to effect the implementation of 65 years retirement age for Teachers.
Teachers from across the country gathered for the annual ritual with the clergy offering prayers for a more secured and safe education system with an end to insecurity as well as for sustainable policies implementation to stem the tide of mass exodus of teachers in the name of Japa.
