The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC says the 35% increment in salary of civil servants “was made in bad faith” as Organised Labour was looking forward to government’s response to its proposal in negotiations for the new National Minimum Wage.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero who stated this was speaking to AIT on the breakfast flagship programme, Kakaaki where he said Organised Labour will respond officially to the 35% increase in salary of civil servants after due consultation with their organs.
Ajaero confirmed that Organised Labour made a request of N615,000 as new National Minimum Wage to the government after zonal hearings by the 37-member Tripartite National Minimum Wage Negotiating Committee. He however insists that the N615,000 proposal was made before the 320% hike in electricity tariff.
NLC is however at a loss that the government has gone into “voice mail” since the N615,000 proposal was made ahead of the expiration of the N30,000 minimum wage on April 18 which was the date the bill was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
On the eve of the 2024 Workers Day, the Federal Government announced an approval of 25 to 35% increase in the salary structures of police officers, the Armed Forces, and public servants, among others.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, NSIWC, Emmanuel Njoku with the increment backdated to take effect from January 1, 2024.
The statement added that the approved increase of between 25 and 35% in salary was for civil servants on the remaining six consolidates salary structures which include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure, CONPSS, Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure, CONRAISS, Consolidated Police Salary Structure, CONPOSS. Others are the Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure, CONPASS, Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure, CONICCS and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure, CONAFSS.
Those in the tertiary education and health sectors had already received their increases which involved Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, CONUASS and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, CONTISS
for universities.
For polytechnics and colleges of education, the statement indicated that the new salary structure involved the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure, CONPCASS and Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure, CONTEDISS.
Those in the Health Sector will also be benefiting through the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure, CONHESS.
