Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo, has advocated the need for a constitutional role for traditional rulers in the country, days after the National Assembly voted against a bill to amend the constitution for this purpose.
The Vice President stated this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, at his palace in Effurun, Delta State, South-South Nigeria.
According to Osibanjo, traditional rulers are the closest institution to the people and for that reason, assigning them constitutional roles will help them complement government efforts in governing the society better.
