Few days to the commencement of campaigns ahead of the Osun State governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured political parties of a level playing field, while warning them against violating electoral laws and guidelines.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, Mutiu Agboke, stated this at an expanded stakeholders’ meeting convened in Osogbo to interface with political actors ahead of the formal kick-off of campaigns on March 11.
Though the date for the Osun governorship election was shifted from August 8 to August 15, 2026, the commencement of electioneering campaigns remains unchanged, with campaign activities officially set to begin on March 11.
At the expanded stakeholders’ meeting, the Resident Electoral Commissioner appealed to political parties to ensure that their campaigns are peaceful and issue-based.
He emphasised that while political competition is legitimate in a democracy, it must be pursued responsibly and in full compliance with the Electoral Act and Guidelines.
Delivering a lecture titled “Campaign Beyond the Box: Working Within the Frame,” former National Commissioner in charge of Election and Party Monitoring, Anthonia Taye cautioned political actors against hostility, misinformation and violence.
ait.live Correspondent at the dialogue reports that it was unanimously agreed by all stakeholders that they must work together for a peaceful and credible governorship election in Osun State.
