Osun Political Crisis: Reps Call On Police, DSS To Maintain Peace, Set Up Investigative Committee

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has resolved to set up an adhoc committee to urgently investigate the brewing political crisis in Osun state

The resolution followed a motion by Bamidele Salam and eight other lawmakers from the state, who appealed for the House intervention to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

The lawmakers say the ugly development is a move orchestrated by Local Government Officials who were sacked by a court judgement in November 2022 to forcefully take over the administration of local governments in the state against advice by the state governor for parties to obey judgement of the court.

They expressed concern that if the current trend of resort to self-help by political actors is not nipped in the bud, citizens may also take laws into their hands, especially when their rights and privileges are abused

The political crisis, according to the lawmakers, has led to the death of six persons with scores of others suffering severe injuries and receiving treatment in various hospitals across the state

The House called on the Inspector General of Police, Director General of the Department of State Security Services, and other security heads to ensure normalcy and order is restored to all local governments in Osun State pending the outcome of the investigation

Lawmakers observed a minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the crisis
