The Medical and Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN says brain drain in the country’s health sector is on the increase year- in year-out as consultant doctors are Leaving in high numbers.
MDCAN President, Dr. Victor Makanjuola says in the last two years alone, over 100 consultants from 17 out of 79 health institutions in Nigeria have left the country to seek greener pastures overseas.
He stated this during the Association’s National Executive Council meeting in Bauchi, North-East Nigeria.

For about four months now, Nigerians have witnessed an uptick number of trained and skilled medical workers migrating to western countries, in particular, to seek better working conditions and packages.
Issues of better structure and manpower for education, rejuvenation of the health system, enhanced physical and socio-economic security are said to be the reasons behind the challenge of brain drain in Nigeria.

With a poor economic environment for Nigerian medical doctors, some of them spoke to ait. live say entrepreneurship in the profession remains the last option.
According to the MDCAN President, the Nigerian Government needs to be actively engaged in finding lasting solutions to some of these issues to be able to reverse the very disturbing migration of medical doctors including consultants abroad.
The theme for the meeting is “A health system at the crossroads; challenges of brain drain and medical training regulations.
