The political landscape in Bayelsa State takes a significant turn as the Chief of Staff to the Governor Pastor Peter Akpe, is sworn in as the new Deputy Governor of the state.
At the ceremony held inside the Executive Council Chamber, of Government House, Governor Douye Diri says Akpe’s selection is based on his integrity, dedication, and fear of God, charging him not to betray the confidence reposed in him.
Months after the passing of former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Bayelsa State turns a new page.
Peter Akpe takes the oath of office and allegiance, administered by the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Matilda Ayemieye-Abrakasa.
Governor Diri pledged to sustain the cordial working relationship he shared with his late deputy, expressing optimism that the new administration team will continue to drive development across the state.

Before his elevation, Peter Akpe served in several capacities, including two-term member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Majority Leader, Deputy Chief of Staff, and later Chief of Staff to the Governor.
In an interview with Government House correspondents, the new Deputy Governor describes his emergence as a moment of mixed emotions but expresses confidence that the grace of God will guide him in the task ahead.
He becomes the sixth deputy governor of Bayelsa State under the democratic dispensation from 1999, following the sudden death of his predecessor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, on December 11, 2025.
The Governor also sworn in a new Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, alongside 18 Permanent Secretaries.
