The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) has condemned the recent attacks by suspected herdsmen in Aondona; Tse Orbiam, Ahume and other communities in Gwer- West, Yelwata and other parts of Guma local Government area of the state, which it says has resulted in the loss of over 20 lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

The PDP in a statement by its State publicity secretary, Tim Nyor expressed disappointment at the Governor’s failure to address these recurring attacks and protect the people of the State.

It demanded from the governor, as the Chief Security Officer, an immediate intervention and comprehensive measures to be put in place to protect Benue communities from the rampaging herdsmen.

The PDP also demanded that Governor Alia should hold the Fulani herdsmen accountable for their actions and urged him to strengthen the enforcement of the Anti-Open Grazing Law now to avert further attacks on Benue communities.

The main opposition party equally called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and stop further bloodshed in Benue since Governor Alia appears to be inefficient, nonchalant, and compromising in handling the security situation in the state.

The Benue PDP is particularly worried that while the Aondoana attacks were ongoing, Governor Alia was reportedly hosting Benue Artists to a dinner at the government house where he was seen making-merry and frolicking with entertainers.

“This sadly demonstrates his lackadaisical attitude towards the plight of the Benue people whom he swore on oath to protect.

It is worrisome that close to 24 hours after the Aondona attack, Governor Hyacinth Alia has not issued a statement in condemnation.

This conveys an unmistakable impression of a Chief Security Officer who has abandoned his primary responsibility.”The Statement added

The PDP sympathised with the bereaved families in Gwer-West and Guma and pray for the departed souls to rest in peace.
