The Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mohammed Kasim, has emerged winner of the chairmanship election in Gwagwalada Area Council, one of the contests held in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory area council polls.
The Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission for Gwagwalada, Philip Akpen, announced the result in the early hours of Sunday.
He said Kasim secured 22,165 votes, defeating Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 17,788 votes.
Akpen described the exercise as peaceful and orderly, noting that Kasim met all legal requirements and was therefore duly returned elected.
The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Biko Umar, finished third with 1,687 votes.
The area council elections took place across the six councils in the FCT, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji Area Council, Bwari Area Council, Kuje Area Council, Kwali Area Council, and Gwagwalada , with voters electing both chairmen and councillors.
In Gwagwalada, a total of 207,577 voters were registered, while 46,294 were accredited to vote.
The chairmanship result breakdown shows the PDP leading with 22,165 votes, followed by APC with 17,788, APGA 1,687, ADC 1,366, SDP 432, NNPP 175, YPP 158, AA 116, ADP 128, and APM 24, while Party A recorded 151 votes.
Overall, 43,960 votes were declared valid, with 1,521 ballots rejected at the end of the exercise.
