Pensioners fight dirty with threats to breakaway from national union

Crisis has broken out in the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, as the Federal Civil Service Pensioners branch of the main body has threatened to breakaway following allegations of illegality against the NUP leadership.

The threat by the retirees to pull out of NUP is coming just days after President Muhammadu Buhari approved pension increase adjustment to align with the new national minimum wage.

The celebration of this pronouncement by retirees across Nigeria, appears short-lived among members of the Federal Civil Service Pensioners, as they seem to be more concerned about what they describe as an illegality in the release of actual check-off dues to them by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners.

The Federal Civil Service Pensioners, which is a branch of the NUP, is already plotting to break away from the umbrella pensioners body for non-military retirees.

Sunday Umueze who is the leader of the senior citizens says a letter from the Ministry of Labour and Employment to the NUP, calling for return to statusquo, was rebuffed by the NUP leadership.

In a swift reaction, NUP spokesman, Bunmi Ogunkolade argues that the retirees are disgruntled, after losing out at the last election into the national body of the Union.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners has suffered more threats of break-up by branches in the last five years since its establishment in 1978.
