As communities displaced by crises in some parts of Plateau state make efforts to return home ahead of the 2024 farming season, a passionate appeal has been made to government to bolster security presence in their villages.
They made this appeal to the committee on resettlement while on an assessment visit to communities ravaged by attacks for over a decade in Plateau.
With the onset of the rains, these villagers have picked up the courage to return to their homes to commence farming, even as they await plans by the government to rebuild their burnt-down houses. They have no choice but to leave their wives and children in IDP camps or with relatives and cramp into every available space they can find. They have been encouraged to return because of the deployment of some security operatives to the area, but for people who witnessed the horrors of the attacks, they are asking for more.
The team set up by the state government to bring displaced people back home has been working round the clock in a bid to ensure that life returns to these sacked communities.
Authorities at the local government level are also playing their part to ensure that the people are resettled.
With the gradual return of peace to Plateau, sacked communities that need to be resettled with Bokkos local government area having about 70 communities, are now having a sigh of relief as two similar teams are working simultaneously in Mangu and Barkin Ladi council areas so that a good number of the people will return home and commence farming.
